Truth That Stands
Occasionally - and that literally means not very often - Mister Bill leaves the door open to his workshop, and I meander in. There are things in there I cannot identify but something I can are tie-wraps: lots and lots of tie-wraps - all colors and sizes. Not only can I identify these, I know they are used to bind and wrap securely something that needs it! Paul writes in Ephesians 6: "Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist ..." (Verses 13-14a NIV). In a time of shifting truths - some subtle, some not so subtle - it is good news that there is Truth, both unchanging and infallible. The psalmist testified, "forever, O Lord, Your word is firmly fixed in the heavens" (119:89 ESV). If you've ever tried to maintain your footing standing at the edge of the ocean's surf, it's just not possible: you soon lose your balance and will topple. Failure and destruction will come to all who trust-in truth twisted and shaped by what man and his culture. Jesus said, "Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock" (Matthew 7:24 ESV). You see, to "put-on" truth is to make "thus says the LORD" your way of life; it is to be confidently fastened with the "belt of truth" - confidently and securely "tie-wrapped" in every area of life. No other truth guides, counsels, comforts, encourages, defends, instructs and empowers with unshakeable steadfastness. His is the ... truth that stands.
