A Successful Walk
Walking on uneven ground can be a bit tricky - so can walking on snow and ice! Mister Bill and I like the option of, as much as is possible, doing neither! God's Word has much to say about how we walk. In Ephesians 5:15, Paul counsels Believers to carefully walk wisely; another one of my favorite instructions are God's words to Joshua after the death of Moses: "Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go." (Joshua 1:7 NASB). When walking, we typically try to avoid things such as tree roots and holes, avoiding them lest we stumble and fall. In our spiritual lives, however, it is the bumps and holes through which God's Word lead us and we mature spiritually. God continues in His instruction, "This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success." (V.9). How silly when we try to orchestrate and manipulate our lives to be free of the uneven and the slippery. James writes, "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." (James 1:2-4 NASB). Yes, this older-me needs to pay closer attention to where and how I step; for the Believer, as we are careful to walk in wisdom, we must also fully trust God Who promises those who walk in obedience ... a successful walk.
