Deliver Myself
Oh, how we love our one- or two-day delivery options; same-day delivery is ... well, over the top! Never did I envision being able to shop from home, clothed in my comfies, and have practically anything brought to my door! The words of this Puritan prayer was cause-to-pause: "Blessed Trinity! Glorious unity! I deliver up myself to you. Receive me, write your name on me, and on everything I have. Set your mark on me, on every member of my body, and every part of my soul." (Joseph Allen, Piercing Heaven). To deliver is to "bring and hand over to the proper recipient." Without hesitation, we hand-over many things: currency, legal documents, gifts, etc. It is, however, with great reluctance - even outright refusal - that Believers hold fast to that which no longer belong to themselves. "Do you not know that your
body is a temple of The Holy Spirit Who is in you, Whom you have from
God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NASB). How casually we read this truth - "you are not your own" - with no regard to how we refuse to hand-over that which is no longer ours! Martyred missionary, Jim Elliot, said: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." As we stand before Jesus one day, our own current foolishness will instantly become great shame. Dear Lord, give me the desire and the strength day-by-day to deliver myself to You.
