Holy Habits

Grocery shopping recently with Mister Bill (not a real good idea) and standing in the produce department, I told him the "experts" say we should "eat fresh." He walked away - so much for that. The additives in foods are generally not good for us; spiritual additives, however, will make-or-break us. "His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him Who called us to His own glory and excellence, by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love." (2 Peter 1:3-7). Truly, we cannot save or make ourselves holy - no! that's what God does. Believers are, however, to add-to (supplement) what God has done and is doing in us by establishing "holy habits" or disciplines. Oswald Chambers says, "we cannot do what God does [and] God will not do what we can do." When we, by an act of our own will determine (that is, take the initiative), to read, study, pray, worship, fellowship, serve ... well, we are investing in a life that is both obedient and pleasing to The Father. Don't walk away from this important truth - embrace holy habits and watch what God will do!
