Trust Him!

Next to my Pop and Granny's was an abandoned house, and I remember the big-bold sign warning people to stay away.  Jesus said in Matthew 6:25, "I tell you, stop being worried or anxious about your life." We say, "it's only natural" to to be ever uneasy about life.  Of course, it is!  The Child of God, however, has been given a new nature - one which does not practice infidelity (unfaithfulness) to obeying The Holy Spirit Who lives within.  Most commonly, it's the little things of life that distract us and draw us away from fully trusting God. "Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor gather and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth more than they?" (V.26). Jesus' message is simple and clear: trust Me!  Prayerfully and humbly consider what cares trouble you then abandon them, giving them to God Almighty (El Shaddai) the One (and only One) Who is completely able and trustworthy. Trust Him!

Redeemed

Store coupons frustrate me! If I even remember to take them with me or use them, they are expired. The look on the cashier's face in no way matches the look on mine. Those who have believed on Jesus (Believers) have this great assurance: "In [Jesus] we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." (Colossians 1:14). That word "redemption" means "a releasing of a debt by full payment." And, how? "In Him [Jesus] we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our sin, according to the riches of His grace." (Ephesians 1:7). What a shame so many have rejected what God has done for spiritual freedom! Nonetheless, it is done, paid in full. No one will be collecting coupons on that future Day of The Lord [when He returns]: "Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation." (2 Corinthians 6:2). Believe on Him now then put on your happiest face. You've been redeemed!

No Shame

Every time I hear the word "shame," I think of how Gomer Pyle accentuated the word: "Shame! Shame! Shame!" he would say in his slow prolonged Southern drawl. I'm also reminded of one of our familly pets (named DC) who knew he was in trouble, and do his best to hide from us. According to Noah Webster's 1868 dictionary, shame is "a painful sensation excited by a consciousness of guilt." Although I've often said there is little shame these days, we all know what shame is or what it should be! In Paul's second letter to young Timothy, he wrote,  "Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15 AMP). The word "study" carries with it the state of eagerness to be the best we can be. Let's be clear: the world's idea of best is not the standard Paul is referring to in this verse. He plainly says the standard is one approved by God! For the child of God (born-again, redeemed), this state-of-being unashamed is not to be taken casually. Scripture tells us that Ezra "devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the LORD, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel" (Ezra 7:10 NIV). Honestly, that to which we "devote" ourselves to reveals what we consider most important - a priority. Let me say from experience: neglect leads to shame. When I neglect mopping or scrubbing or dusting, my floors, bathrooms and furniture become "shamefully" dirty. Paul reminds us to make haste (eagerly, diligently) give our very best effort (do our best) to study and meditate on God's Word so that we become approved by God Most High and bear ... no shame.

Show-Off Faith

For most of our day-to-day decisions, we rely on basic common sense - I'm grateful for that sensibility!  Common sense, however, is often a hindrance to faith.  The way of faith can be paralyzing but it’s the way of Christ: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7).  “At the bar of common sense, Jesus Christ’s statements may seem mad; but bring them to the bar of faith, and you begin to find with awestruck spirit that they are the words of God.” (Oswald Chambers).  When we come to decisions based on pure reason,  faith usually loses to the sensible.  God assures us faith is displays our decisions: “Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” (James 2:26).  Faith’s evidences will be its non-sense moves – those decisions made in faith in spite of common sense.  This is when our faith is exposed, and God is honored.  Do you have a ... show-off faith?

Nothing Left

The ending of a day or a project or an event can leave us tired, frazzled, exhausted, spent. We feel as it there's nothing left! We can feel as if physically, mentally, emotionally we've given all we had, poured all-of-us into something. God said we are to love Him like that - with "all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." (Deuteronomy 6:5). The Hebrews word "heart" includes mind, knowledge, thinking, reflection, memory, conscience ... the seat of all man's appetites, emotions, passions and courage. It is loving God and the things of God with all we are, and that love stimulates us to love in word and deed. Quite simply, it means we love God with all we have in us - till there's ... nothing left.

Read It Much

What do you read much? Do you first reach for a novel, a magazine, online articles? The answer to this question may bring some shame because I suspect the answer isn't God's Word. Men are often accused of ignoring the instructions or reaching for them as a last resort. While there may be some truth to that, I'm fairly confident we all are too often slow to reach for The Book that matters most! The psalmist wrote, "O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day (Psalm 119:97) ... "How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Psalm 119:103) ... "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105). The ones who agree with the psalmist's words will be the one who prefers The Word. George Muller wrote, "If the reader understands very little of the Word of God, he ought to read it very much; for the Spirit explains the Word by the Word. And if he enjoys the reading of the Word little, that is just the reason why he should read it very much; for the frequent reading of the Scriptures creates a delight in them." (from "Gathering Gems"). We lot "much" of many things - the beach, ice cream, etc. How much do I, do you love of the Word of God? That which we read much says a lot!

Live the Life

Retirees often say they're "living the life," - Mister Bill and I can relate to that! For us, the trade-off of morning alarms and work traffic for leisure days, family and travel has indeed been a new and good way to ... live life. To the Believers at Colossae, Paul encouraged living the New Life that was theirs in Christ Jesus: "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above not on things that are on earth." (Colossians 3:1-2, ESV). What a sad sight to see many Believers reflecting gloom and doom in their faces! Aren't we aware our old life died when we met Jesus! Paul continues by reminding us we are now "hidden with Christ in God" (V.3). When we know this in our hearts, it will show up on our faces! Everything changed when we received this New Life at salvation - God says we are to "set your minds," - seriously discipline yourselves to be continuously focused in the study, meditation, memorization and application of His Word. For the born-again child of God, it's the only way to ... live the life!

Your Delight

Have you ever noticed what determination "looks" like? It's often seen in a toddler who declares, "I can do it all by myself." Hard as it is to watch the struggle, often the self-declared determination is indeed enough. Hear the determination in the psalmist's words from Psalm 119: "I shall not be ashamed" (V6) ... "I shall give thanks" (V7) ... "I shall keep your statues" (V8) ... "I will meditate" (V15) ... "I shall delight" (V16) ..."I will keep Your law" (V44) - and the determinations go on and on! I We all make declarations every day in some form or another: I will mop the floor, wash the sheets, go to the bank, etc. How sad earthly pursuits take priority over the eternal! The psalmist explains the priority of his declarations: "The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces" (V72) ... "How sweet are Your words to my taste - yes, sweeter than honey to my  mouth" (V103) ... "I have inherited Your testimonies forever, for they are the joy of my heart" (V111). Somehow through the days of his life, the psalmist had - by an act of his own will - prioritized seeking The Lord first, and his determination had become his greatest joy. God and His words were not only a determination, they were a delight. Do you cherish time with God in His Word? If so, He will become your determination - He will become ... your delight.

Song of My Soul

Benefits are usually a big factor in decision-making! When searching for a hotel, for example, room amenities matter - yes, the froo-froo stuff matters. The psalmist David says, "Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits." (Psalm 130:1-2 NASB). The Hebrew word "benefits" refers to the "dealing of one's hand." When that hotel doesn't measure-up nor delivers on its promised benefits, we may give a bad review or request a refund. With The LORD, however, always delivers and more than we deserve or expect. Furthermore, "He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us." (Verses 10-12 NASB). It's amazing that God is even mindful of me but He is; when my sin had disqualified me God looked upon me in mercy. He offered the precious blood of His Son, Jesus, Who brought me back into right-standing before The Father. Now I stand in the righteousness of Christ and enjoy all God's love and benefits. "Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee - How great Thou art - How great Thou art!" My Savior, My God ... song of my soul.

Daily Mercies

Perhaps you've heard of women having a "make-over" - yes, I agreed to such a thing ... once. I much prefer a "do-over" - another opportunity, a second-chance [so to speak]. Thankfully, the graciousness of God gives us those! The Lord said to Jonah, "Arise, go to Nineveh ... cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me." (Jonah 1:2 NASB). The next two words are alarming: "But Jonah" - he did not obey; he fled from The Lord, and you may remember things did not go well for him. Then we read in Jonah 3, "The LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, 'Arise, go to Nineveh' ... So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh." (V.1-2). Oh my, I see myself in Jonah - stubborn and foolish, knowing the right thing to do yet doing the opposite. Hence, finding myself in my own "belly of a fish," I've cried out as Jonah, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, and He answered me ... You heard my voice" (Jonah 2:2 NASB). I'm reminded of a poem: "I wish that there were some wonderful place - Called the Land of Beginning Again - Where all our mistakes and all our heartaches - And all of our selfish grief - Could be dropped like a shabby, old coat at the door - And never be put on again." Oh, but there IS a place of beginning again! It is at the feet of The Savior where we humbly bow in confession and repentance, accept His kind forgiveness then rise to complete rest and joy as we obey Him. One "make-over" was enough for this old gal but I am eternally grateful my God allows do-overs; He welcomes me back when I stumble and fall. He assures me in Lamentations 3:22 that His steadfast love is unceasing, His mercies never end - they are new every morning, and great is His faithfulness. What a wonderful Father He is - The One of ... daily mercies.

The Good Day

Some folks speak of the "good old days" when life was simpler and slower ... seemed better. Those days, of course, may have lacked some dearly-beloved conveniences. I suggest there's enough considerations to tantalize us into longings for other times. In Exodus, we read how God utterly exposed and crushed all of Egypt's false gods through a series of plagues; He left little doubt about His sovereignty and power! After the Hebrews left Egypt set free of slavery - as promised - God continued to care for His people; the miracles witnessed at the Red Sea and throughout their wilderness journey further proved His power, love and faithfulness. It wasn't long before the people began to grumble and complain; perhaps the height of their disgruntling they said, "Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.'" (Numbers 11:4-6 NASB). Their ingratitude had caused them to slip into a longing for the land of bondage and slavery ... the "good old days?" Perhaps one of the earliest psalms, a prayer of Israel's leader Moses, he says: "O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days." (Psalm 90:14 NASB). Ingratitude always leads to discontent; gratitude, however, fulfills the longing heart - a satisfaction of the soul itself! "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever." (Psalm 136;1 ESV). Unless we understand and acknowledge The Lord as eternally good - knowing "good" is His nature - we too will find ourselves longing for other things. Don't fall into the enemy's trap of longing for what was or what might be. This day - today - with all that is in it is the best day to be glad "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24 ESV). Today is ... the good day!

Hope of Every Season

Bicycling was something the younger-me enjoyed! The best part was coasting downhill but every downhill coast had an uphill return - not so much fun. Life is much more pleasant when free of the struggles! Perhaps you're in a season of peace and joy right now; I suggest you enjoy it while it lasts. For the child of God, these may be times when The Father knows we may be weak or timid in our faith. While momentarily coasting, the time will come for some serious peddling uphill - a rougher season when we may struggle to see Him at work in us. During a solar eclipse when the light is hidden from view, the sun remains. So it is with God during the uphill treks, those times when we can't seem to see the light of His face upon us. Charles Spurgeon wrote, "We need winds and tempests to exercise our faith, to tear off the rotten bough of self-dependence, and to root us more firmly in Christ." (Morning by Morning). While the ease of coasting was the preferred way of biking, to get back home, there was some hard peddlin' necessary. Jeremiah reminds us, "[God] You are my hope in the day of evil" (17:17 KJV). Both the season of ease and the season of struggle are necessary to grow us in Christ. Let us find Him - the ... Hope of every season.
